In 2011 I focused on a series framed by simple constants -- canvas size, acrylic paint (often with painted tyvek collage elements and drawing media) and a modest collection of Goodwill coffee/tea servers. As in previous still lifes and the Trios series, I worked permutations of form, color, and texture to explore the range of feeling and aesthetics that could be drawn out of -- the pot.

Still Life Paintings and Drawings

For me a still life is like a theatrical stage: the objects -- glass vases, bowls, bones, fruits, leaves... all have the presence of players in a silent drama or comedy of color, shape, line, and spatial relations. The same object, like a gifted character actor, can reappear in multiple works once elegant, then intense and agitated, later defined and stolid. I find much challenge and stimulus from working in series, gardening the same modest plot for maximum yields.

Black and White

Black (and white) and all the nuances in between are eloquent. Using tyvek, a synthetic paper, lush black ink, and an array of brushes and pens, I prepare raw material for collaging. Inked cut-outs are arranged and re-arranged onto a heavy stock paper until a pattern emerges with just the right polarities.

Monotype Prints

Trios Each one-of-a-kind print employs the same constants: paper size (15"x 23"), a triptych composition, and three primal shapes—circle, triangle, and square. Though seemingly formal and impersonal in concept, I found as I worked with this series that the geometric shapes took on a life of their own. Letting intuition and spontaneity lead, permutations of order, scale, color and texture generated an ever-changing landscape of psychic life.

Drawings, etc.

Drawing, in various mediums, is a practice I use to explore a subject, to record quickly my direct responses to what I see. I love the spontaneity. These drawings are an end in themselves as well as steps toward paintings.
